As I started the City Folk Homestead blog, I spent a lot of time reflecting on the story behind it. Where did we come from? How deep did those city roots really run? How far have we come in building a new homestead? Are we still applying a city mindset to country living or are we slowly integrating more home-centered simple living into our daily life? Where are we going on our homesteading journey? What do we hope to accomplish in the next year, five years, ten years on the homestead? How will we get there?
While mulling these ideas over, I came to a pretty fun conclusion: As much as I love the meals I have made from scratch and the culinary skills I have gained, as helpful as it is to know how to use power tools and build something from scratch, as excited as I am about the traction we are finally gaining and the vision I can see for the future, what brings me the most happiness in my homesteading life is opening the door to my chicken run and watching all of my birds flock to freedom.
Am I The Only One Who Feels This Way?
Perhaps I feel like our chickens now that our homesteading roots are a little deeper. After two years, I don’t feel they are as fragile or could be easily plucked out of the ground. Freedom. Security. Excitement. Motivation to find the next right thing. I am reminded of the peace I feel as I watch my chickens run out of the door every morning like it’s Christmas. I am finally living a life pursuing my dreams and desires for freedom.
When you watch the chickens in the video, or even your own animals on your homestead, what are you reminded of? How are you inspired? Please let me know in the comments and let’s build and dream together!
